Olympic champion Ed McKeever failed to regain his European sprint canoeing title after coming home fifth in the K1 200m final in Portugal. McKeever, who has made the podium at the last three editions of the European Championships and won gold in 2010, had been an impressive qualifier from Saturday’s heats.
The juggernaut that is the German Mixed Relay team added another European Championship relay gold medal to their collection with victory in Alanya. The 2011 winners, and 2012 runners up, claimed another title after a strong team performance from Anja Knapp, Jonathan Zipf, Rebecca Robisch and Sebastian Rank. Robisch was on the winning side in 2011 and Knapp was involved in Eilat last year.
Ashley McKenzie won bronze for Great Britain in day one of this weekend’s International Judo Federation (IJF) Miami Grand Prix event.
Plymouth Leander swimmer Joseph Patching claimed two British records on day two of the British Masters and Senior Age Group Championships 2013.

Great Britain Olympic champion Ed McKeever won his heat with ease to advance straight to K1 200m final at the sprint canoeing European Championship in Portugal. McKeever, who is seeking to regain the title he won in 2010, clocked 36.126 seconds to win by nearly one and a half seconds, while Spanish Olympic silver medallist Saúl Craviotto finished a distant last. Rachel Cawthorn qualified to the women’s K1 200m and 500m final while London 2012 bronze medallists Liam Heath and Jon Schofield will line up in the K2 200m final.
