World Cup action heats up with the third race of the circuit in Huatulco, Mexico. This is the sixth year the tourist destination has been part of the World Cup calendar, and the scorching heat is part of the unique challenge facing athletes preparing to toe the line. An ocean swim and a tough hill in the middle of the bike course and at the start of the run loop will test the field, which includes nine London Olympians.

Over the weekend, the Saipan Swim Club enjoyed a record number of swimmers participating in its 2.4 km Escape from Mañagaha to American Memorial Park. On the island of Saipan, part of the US Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands in the North Pacific, 69 out of 72 swimmers finished the Escape, compared with 34 in 2011 and 42 participants in 2012. The ages of the swimmers ranged from 7 to 61 years with a third of the swimmers using fins, buoys, paddles or snorkels.

Three-time Olympic medallist William Fox-Pitt got the defence of his Kentucky Three Day Event crown off to a decent start on day one in Lexington. The 44-year-old, who has won the Kentucky title twice in the past three years, is in fourth place after 23 of the 46-horse field performed their dressage tests. Fox-Pitt scored 46.2 aboard Seacookie, with whom he finished as runner-up at the Burghley Horse Trials in 2010, with his test with Chilli Morning still to come.

The athletes are so close to one another that they frequently bump, hit, crawl, pull, bang into, bounce off of, slap, jam and smash into one another.
