The first elite cross-country titles of the 2013 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup presented by Shimano were awarded on Sunday in Albstadt, Germany, with Eva Lechner (Colnago Sudtirol) winning the women’s competition, and Daniel McConnell (Trek Factory Racing) taking the men’s. Raphael Gay (Creuse Oxygene) won the Junior men’s competition held earlier in the day. After sunny conditions a day earlier for the Under-23 races, the clouds moved in overnight, threatening rain.

The men’s seven lap race began after the rain had stopped, but the damage had been done, leaving the course so slick and treacherous in the downhills that one major jump was closed after a lap for safety reasons

The 2013 season of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup presented by Shimano opened on Friday, in Albstadt, Germany, with the brand new Eliminator discipline and two brand new World Cup leaders. The Eliminator World Cup saw Alexandra Engen (Ghost Factory) and Daniel Federspiel (Otztal Scott Racing) awarded the first ever leader’s jerseys in this new event. The Eliminator begins with a time trial around a short urban course filled with obstacles.

During the winter, the MTB family lost three of its members: Erwin Wildhaber from Switzerland, mechanic for the Scott Swisspower team who was in the sport for many years. Inaki Lejarreta from Spain who was riding for the Orbea team, 2001 Junior World Champion and overall winner of the 2010 Spanish Cup Burry Stander from South Africa who was riding for Specialized Factory Racing, 2009 U23 UCI World Champion, 5th of the last Olympics in London, 2nd of the 2012 overall UCI MTB Cross Counry World Cup and double winner of the Cape Epic.
